Description

During each round, players select actions from a set of available (open draft). The action card is immediately docked to the player’s Station, meaning that the players always consider two aspects: whether they need a card itself, and whether they need an action. When the active player selects an action, it gets executed by all players simultaneously, while the active player obtains some additional benefit.

The action itself consists of simple operations over cards, resources, and Terraforming Points. Players tend to build strong production-consumption chains made of Delivery, Engineering, and Terraforming station modules. There is also a shared resource pool, which is made of unused resources and affects all the players. It provides a way of indirect economical pressure on other players.

Military cards open tactical possibilities like a better choice of cards in hand or move priority. There is also a way of direct interaction on Military action. The victim of that action gets a compensation which depends on the player’s military supremacy. So the smart management of military power gives to a player strong starting points for other actions execution.

The game is ideal for more experiences players, although families will have a lot of fun too, if children are above the age of 12 and good at English.

A solid English is important for the game. If you have that, you’re guaranteed to have a lot of fun with this game.
While getting to know the developer of Space Expatriate, I was able to find out how many hours went into the rules (logic) alone – really a lot.
I can say that all the work was worth it. The end result is a perfectly balanced game in which a wide variety of strategies can lead to victory.
